A timeless melding of gothic, Dada and classical influences.True to the goth tradition black tape have pursued since 1986, As One Aflame Laid Bare By Desire maintains the air of gloomy antiquity established over the course of seven albums. More concerned with the dark ambiguities of desire than with apocalyptic ennui, composer/keyboardist Sam Rosenthal finds equal inspiration in ambient and classical musics, as well as in concepts explored by French artist Marcel Duchamp. This melding of influences imbues tracks like "The Apotheosis" and "The Green Box" with epic overtones. "Dream" sounds like a love song sung by ghosts. Rosenthal is severely underrecognized for his ambient efforts, but the closing track, "The passage," is very much of the Steve Roach/Brian Eno school of dream music, mournfully drifting out and away over the marshlands of the afterlife. Best compared with 1991's A Chaos Of Desire, As One Aflame sees the return of vocalists Julianna Towns and Oscar Herrera, and violinist Vicki Richards intuitively counters Rosenthal's keyboard playing. Flautist Lisa Feuer joins the group as naturally as a new blossom appears on a summer flower. Combining the ethereal with the classical and the ambient with the romantic, As One Aflame is an imperfect yet timeless blending of emotion and intellect, art and music, dream and reality.
