Various ‎– Sturmreif: The New Underground Of Military Pop (CD)

Výrobce: Castellum Stoufenburc
Katalogové číslo: CS001/10
Termín dodání (dny): 1
Skladem: 6 CD

Dark Ambient, Industrial, Experimental, Drone, Neofolk

While certainly an older release, Castellum Stoufenburc’s compilation Sturmreif: The New Underground of Military Pop might serve anyone well as an introduction to the martial industrial genre. Yes, I realize the term pop is quite prominent in the disc’s title, but don’t let that deter you.

Spread out across 16 tracks from various bands, Sturmreif provides us with a vast cross-section of the martial sound covering quite a few countries in the process. Artists from Germany, France, and Italy dominate this collection and seem fairly representative of the various sub-sects of the martial scene.

While you can’t brush the politics aside that is part and parcel in this scene, I’ll leave that for the listener to discern as each of the bands project their own points of view and messages. Some are similar — some are not, so I’d rather give an overview of the musical styles combined on Sturmreif.

Ritualistic and dark soundscapes are best provided by tracks from TZ.P2 , Le Silence des Ruines, Barbarossa Umtrunk, and Gabe-Unruh. Out of these, I am most drawn in by the steady and somber sound of Le Silence des Ruines’ “Le Déclin de nos Sentiments”. (This track was also used in the excellent martial set by DJ Edelweiss – worth looking for.)

Elements of neofolk, which finds itself partnered with the martial scene and is in fact sometimes an integral part of the genre, is featured on the excellent track, “Une Ombre sur la Pierre,” by Jörvallr. Acoustic guitar paired with electronic and reverb-laden percussion drive an unforgettable melody, supported by sparse piano and delicate vocals.

Strydwolf provides an opposite take on the neofolk style with the upbeat tempo track “Molten Youth.” Stylistically, it’s more of a “beer hall” number – at least that’s what comes to mind as I listen to it.

Waffenruhe contrast this with the more traditional neofolk/martial track, “Gehorsam.” This is another upbeat song with a bright woodwind lead over dark strings and drumming that marches ahead, with crisp snare and rumbling bass.

Continuing on with yet another stylistic variation, is Seuchensturm’s “Vincere,” which features a clap track beat with a grungy electro-bass line that could easily land on the playlist of any EBM DJ.

Spreu & Weizen and Schutzstaffel provide a bit heavier tracks with “Return of the Warlord” and “Tausend Jahre Später,” respectively. S&W’s sound on this particular song is much grittier than their last album, but the basis of their powerful and signature sound is there. Schutzstaffel seems to be more rock-oriented with a somewhat standard drum beat and crunchy guitar.

If anything, Sturmreif is diverse, which proves that although the martial industrial/pop genre does have unifying elements both sonically and politically, there also is a vast range of styles and emotions here. Whether you’re new to the genre, or simply looking for a sampler, or even wanting to hear earlier works by these artists, Sturmreif is a worthwhile disc.
