Svarrogh: Temple Of The Sun (mCD)

Výrobce: Ahnstern
Katalogové číslo: Ahnstern27
Termín dodání (dny): 1
Skladem: 2 mCD

Acoustic, Modern Classical, Neofolk

This three-track MCD is the follow-up to Svarrogh’s excellent Balkan Renaissance album, and it finds the band further developing the experimental industrial folk sound which that album pioneered, as opposed to the band’s earlier black metal offerings (incidentally, Svarrogh’s official website gives the impression that the band is still black metal, and it really needs updating – Balkan Renaissance and this latest release aren’t even mentioned).

One notable aspect of Temple of the Sun is the rich variety of voices and languages on it. Band leader Dimo Dimov sings in his native Bulgarian, guest vocalists contribute Latvian and Italian vocals to the title track, Gerhard from Allerseelen sings the whole of the second track, ‘Der Honig Der Grauen Stadt’ (‘The Honey Of The Grey City’) in German, and Bruno Ardo from Sangre Cavallum sings in Portuguese on closing track ‘Weeping Giant’. If I might be permitted to get political for a moment (and just try and stop me!), this is real ethnic diversity, the diversity of a strong and culturally confident Europe of a hundred flags, rather than the tokenistic multiculturalism which global capitalism sprinkles like chocolate powder over the bland foam of its unappetising pap. It also makes Svarrogh a natural fit alongside such Ahnstern labelmates as Sturmpercht, Waldteufel and Sangre Cavallum, all bands who are concerned with the promotion and preservation of European folk traditions.

All instruments on the recording are played by Dimo, with a strong folk flavour imparted by the ever-present tamboura (a kind of mandolin) and acoustic guitar, over programmed percussion and synth. Some live drums and maybe small hand percussion, cowbells and the like, might add a lot to the earthy flavour of Svarrogh’s sound, and they play live as a three-piece with drums and bass, so this shouldn’t be impossible to arrange – looking back at my review of Balkan Renaissance, I see that I made the same criticism then. ‘Weeping Giant’ is both the longest and the heaviest track here, dominated by pounding industrial beats throughout its nine minutes.

Temple Of The Sun comes nicely presented in a digipack with colourful, folksy solar artwork by Haate Kaate.
